The New Theme for Fire Prevention Week 2018: Look. Listen. Learn.

This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week is, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere,” which teaches the 3 basic and most important steps in reducing the chances of having an accidental fire in the home and also what to do in the event of one.

As explained by the National Fire Prevention Association, they are:

“LOOK” for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.

“LISTEN” for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should meet.

“LEARN” two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.

In the past, we’ve offered some helpful pointers on planning out and executing a home fire escape plan and even provided you with a handy fire escape route mapping grid. We’d like to share it once again to help families planning an emergency fire escape plan make this extremely important lesson as simple, enjoyable and memorable as possible. Just click on the image below to access the free full-sized tool.

As an added bonus, we recently shared a new animated video featuring one of the stars of our Fab 5 Fire Safety Squad, Exit Plan Elizabeth. In it, she teaches several important tips to remember when planning and executing your home fire escape route. This is just another way for us to help make a potentially life saving lesson into a fun learning experience that’s as easy as possible to commit to memory.
